Phosphorus Oxychloride (POCl₃), also called Phosphoryl Chloride, is a colourless fuming liquid with a pungent odour. Its tetrahedral molecular geometry — with one P=O and three P–Cl bonds — makes it a far more selective chlorinating and phosphorylating agent than many alternatives. It is the preferred reagent for chlorinating hydroxyl and amino groups in complex organic molecules, particularly in API synthesis where functional-group selectivity is paramount.
